Established in the 1890s, First Hill is one of Seattle’s oldest neighborhoods, considered by many to be Seattle’s official first neighborhood.
Located right between Downtown Seattle and Capitol Hill, First Hill is a diverse jumble of high-rise apartments, historic mansions, and hospitals. The neighborhood is known for the abundance of medical facilities and excellent hospitals (including Virginia Mason, one of the nation’s best) within its boundaries. It is also home to many doctors and people who work in the medical profession, earning it the nicknames “Seattle’s medical hub” and “pill hill”.
Known for its close proximity to some of Seattle’s most happening areas and its quiet ambiance, First Hill is a very walkable area of Seattle comprised of shops, restaurants, the Frye Art Museum, gleaming medical towers, and elegant residential streets filled with stately homes. You may just have a heart attack walking up this neighborhood’s steep hills, but at least you’ll be close to help!
