Seattle Farmers Market: the Season of Turnips

Seattle Farmers Market: the Season of Turnips

Farmers' markets are a summer tradition. From the tomatoes and potatoes to the peas and beans and other greens, these markets prime you for healthy eating and seasoned feasting. Plus, they’re good for your wallet. But which farmers' markets are worth the time for finding thyme? Check out some of the following local jaunts:

The Pike Place Market

The Pike Place Market offers fresh produce, baked goods, and vendors selling arts and crafts. Of course, it also offers restaurants, breweries, and a nearby Ferris wheel. It’s not limited to summer, either; it’s open year around, though the hours of individual businesses vary. It’s located at 1501 Pike Place.

The Pike Place Seasonal Downtown Market

An offshoot of the Pike Place Market, the Downtown Market is a summer-time version. The hours and location varies: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesdays at City Hall Plaza; 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays at Pike Place and Pine Street; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursdays at South Lake Union; and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays at First Hill.

Columbia City Farmers Market

The Columbia City Farmers Market is located at 37th Avenue South and South Edmunds Street. It offers local produce, a variety of food vendors, poultry and eggs, flower bouquets, and fresh herbs. It also features a selection of sustainable seafood and meats.

West Seattle Farmers Market

The West Seattle Farmers Market is open on Sundays and features a variety of produce and other food selections. It’s open all year round, but only for a few hours a day: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. It’s located at California Ave SW and SW Alaska in the middle of West Seattle Junction.

Queen Anne Farmers Market

The Queen Anne Farmers Market is the only independently run market in the area. It takes place on Thursdays from June through October, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at Queen Anne Ave. N. and West Crocket St. It offers not only plenty of produce, but also live music, demos by chefs, and lots of activities for children.  It’s a good option for people who can’t make it to the market during working hours.

Farmers markets are wonderful, family-oriented outings – take some time this summer to explore those near and far. After all, this is the season for sun, fun, and fruits and vegetables.
